Marianne Schuppe is a German/Swiss composer - performer of music for voices, based in Basel,
Switzerland.
Her work takes place in the borderlands between music and language.
She studied visual arts and music at Hochschule Hildesheim between 1979 and 1982 and continued her
vocal studies in Carnatic Music in the South of India (1983), with Jolanda Rodio in Switzerland (1984-86)
and Michiko Hirayama in Italy (1988-2003).
Since the mideightees she has performed internationally as a singer and vocalist of contemporary music.
She has been a soloist with ensembles such as Klangforum Wien and Basel Sinfonietta. As a composer she developed projects with trained and untrained voices in public spaces, outdoors and indoors, often extending traditional concert format.
Until 2010 she was known for her recordings of vocal music by Giacinto Scelsi and Morton Feldman and
for her activities as an improviser.
Since 2008 she is developing a solo-work for voice and sparse
accompanyment by lute and a miniset of cableless electronics, a device called e-ponts.
In slow songs (2015) and nosongs (2918) she is reweighing the traditional ingredients of song.
Beyond that her works include text scores, poems, essays and ensemble pieces and have been released
with Col Legno, New Albion, Edition Wandelweiser, Telos Records, Akademie Verlag Berlin, Edition
Howeg, Zürich a.o.
For many years she has been a teacher and lecturer for voice and improvisation in Switzerland, Germany
and Japan in various institutions.

Sängerin und Komponistin, lebt in Basel und arbeitet an den Übergängen von Musik und Sprache.
Studierte Bildende Kunst und Musik in einem interdisziplinären Modellstudiengang an der Hochschule Hildesheim (1979-82) und setzte ihre Gesangsstudien in Südindien (1983 in Carnatic Music), bei Jolanda Rodio (1984-86) in der Schweiz und Michiko Hirayama (1988-2003) in Italien fort.
Seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre international tätig als Sängerin und Vokalistin mit Arbeitsfeld zeitgenössische Musik, Uraufführungen, solistische Tätigkeit (Klangforum Wien, Basel Sinfonietta, u.a.), Improvisation und interdisziplinäre Projekte. Als Komponistin
entwickelt sie Projekte mit Stimmen in öffentlichen Räumen, die oftmals das traditionelle Konzertformat erweitern.
Bis etwa 2010 wurde sie vor allem durch ihre Veröffentlichungen der Vokalmusik Giacinto Scelsis, Morton Feldmans und als Improvisatorin bekannt.
Seit 2008 Entwicklung einer solistischen Arbeit für Stimme mit sparsamer Begleitung von Laute und E-Ponts : slow songs (2015) und nosongs (2018) als CDs in der Edition Wandelweiser erschienen.
Ihre Arbeiten umfassen Text-Partituren, Gedichte, Essays und Kompositionen für Stimmen. Letztere entstehen aus der Erfahrung und Praxis als Sängerin und Lehrende und werden von Ensembles mit unterschiedlichem musikalischen und vokalen Hintergrund aufgeführt.
Langjährige Lehrtätigkeit in der Schweiz, Deutschland und Japan an diversen Institutionen.
